Getting Lost in Maps

Canadian Mapping

I love maps! Can't get enough of them!! I'm sure most of you will relate, there is nothing quite like pouring over a map of the destination for your latest adventure. You can't beat the pleasure of perusing a traditional map but some of the technology we have now is pretty awesome for the would-be adventurer. Planning for the Yukon Assignment has been particularly exciting as the Canadian government provides excellent mapping free for download on the internet. Once downloaded it is possible to overlay this on the topographic data of Google Earth. This makes for an incredible planning resource as you can effectively do a fly through of your entire expedition route from your laptop!

George Cave has a great TED talk on using technology on expeditions. I used a lot of his work in the planning of the Yukon Assignment. Cheers George!
